Next to Normal
Music by Tom Kitt
Book and Lyrics by Brian Yorkey
Directed by Elizabeth Stepkowski Tarhan
Musical Direction by Ian Robertson
Choreographed by Taylor Rae Steedman
Every family has its own version of normal.
On the surface, the Goodmans seem like an ordinary family, navigating marriage, teenage growing pains and the demands of everyday life. Behind their familiar routines, however, Diana is living with bipolar disorder, and each member of her family is struggling to find their own footing.
As Diana searches for treatment and a way forward, her husband Dan holds tightly to the hope that things can get better. Their daughter Natalie works to find her own voice while feeling overlooked at home. Together, they face the weight of grief, the uncertainty of change and the difficult truth that loving someone does not always mean knowing how to help.
Winner of three Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Next to Normal pairs an electrifying rock score with an intimate, deeply human story. With humour, tenderness and unflinching honesty, this groundbreaking musical explores mental illness, memory and the effects of loss on an entire family.
Moving and ultimately hopeful, Next to Normal asks what it means to heal—and whether finding a life worth living begins with letting go of what we think “normal” should be.
