  • Every year, Top Secret Musical brings together some of Calgary’s finest talent, a spirited audience, and a whole lot of mystery—for one unforgettable night of theatre. But beyond the laughter, the spectacle, and the joy of the surprise lies a greater purpose: this singular event fuels something truly transformational for our organization and our community.

Our 49th Season to be Brave would not be complete without Top Secret Musical, because this event exemplifies exactly what bravery looks like in action—artists jumping into roles sight unseen, audiences trusting in the magic of the unknown, and all of us rallying behind something bigger than ourselves.

That "something" is the Ellie Tims Project.

Named after our inspiring founder, the Ellie Tims Project is the heart of our outreach and inclusion efforts. It is the force behind our ability to remove financial barriers for families, to offer free or subsidized programming, and to ensure that every child has access to the transformative power of theatre—regardless of their circumstances. Through this project, we nurture creativity, confidence, and belonging in young people who might not otherwise have the chance to shine.

The success of Top Secret Musical directly supports this vital work. Every ticket purchased, every donation made, every cheer from the crowd fuels opportunities that reach far beyond our stage. It helps us honour Ellie’s legacy by keeping our doors open wider, our hearts fuller, and our commitment to community stronger than ever.

So while the show may be a secret, the impact is no mystery. Thank you for being part of this incredible tradition and for helping us ensure that the gift of theatre is one we can continue to share—with everyone.

    With deepest gratitude,

    JP Thibodeau
    Artistic Director, StoryBook Theatre

  • If there’s one night in the season that I look forward to with absolute giddy excitement, it’s Top Secret Musical. There’s nothing else quite like it—one show, one night, one chance to experience something truly outrageous, brave, and unforgettable. And for me, as a director and creator, it is hands-down one of my favourite nights in all of theatre.

What makes this night so remarkable isn’t just the secrecy or the surprise—it’s the volunteers who bring it all to life.

From the performers on stage to the team behind the scenes, every person involved in Top Secret Musical gives their time freely and wholeheartedly. And here’s the wild part: they only have five or six rehearsals. That’s it. In less than a week, this incredible group of artists puts together a full production—memorizing songs, learning choreography, crafting characters—all while juggling their everyday lives.

It is theatre at its most raw, most joyful, and most courageous.

And it’s not just the cast. Behind every moment you see tonight is a dedicated team of volunteers managing props, building quick sets, styling costumes, handling mics, and keeping the whole thing running smoothly. They are the unsung heroes of this beautiful chaos, and they make the impossible feel effortless.

Top Secret Musical is more than just a fundraiser. It’s a celebration of what theatre can do when community comes together. It’s about the magic that happens when people give their time, talent, and trust—just for the love of it. The energy, the laughter, the nerves, the surprises… it’s all part of what makes this night one of the most joyful and fulfilling experiences I get to create.

To every volunteer—on stage, backstage, or somewhere in between—thank you. Your generosity and spirit are what make this night soar.
To our audience—thank you for showing up, for playing along, and for believing in the magic of what a night like this can do.

Buckle up. Anything can happen—and it usually does.

    With endless pride and gratitude,

    JP Thibodeau
    Director
