StoryBook Theatre has a 40-year history of excellence in the production children’s theatre and is Canada’s largest volunteer driven Theatre for Young Audiences.  SBT produces 8 full scale semi-professional, high quality productions each year with runs ranging from 3 to 5 weeks in addition to its year round theatre school, workshops and fundraising events.


Call for scripts

- 3 Scripts will be awarded $1,000.00 each

- The playwright/s of the 3 winning scripts will be invited to participate in a workshop for play development with a professional dramaturg and director

- The workshop will culminate in a public reading at SBT in Calgary in September 2016

- Winning plays may be eligible for up to an additional $700 for travel costs outside of Calgary

- There is NO submission fee


Submission guidelines

- We are looking for original plays including adaptations of folktales or stories from the global culture ( Please note we are NOT accepting musicals at this time)

- Plays must be previously unproduced and unpublished.

- Works must be suitable for young audiences (8 yrs old and up)

- Plays must be 50-75 minutes in length

- Scripts may have as many characters as you like but must be played by a cast of no more than 8 actors

- Playwrights must reside in Canada to be eligible to participate

- Electronic submissions only


Please send your script as a PDF with an cover email that includes

- Your name or the names of the playwrights who hold the copyright

- The title of your play

- Confirmation that you have read and understand the submission guidelines

- Confirmation that if your script is from an adaptation that rights have been secured with the original rights holder for works not in the public domain

As a professional playwright herself, Caroline understands perfectly what it is like to work with a dramaturg, having worked with some of Canada’s finest.  Caroline’s company is Dramaturgy on Demand is where she enjoys being a literary advisor to some of Canada’s top playwrights as well as, by Skype, playwrights in the USA and England.  For three years, she worked as Literary Manager for Lunchbox Theatre and was the dramaturg for their new play development series - Stage One. Caroline is also the Resident Dramaturg for Urban Stories Theatre.  She sits on the National Council with the Playwrights Guild of Canada where she has been a member for 30 years. She also sat on the board of Alberta Playwright’s Network, as a director chairing the Programing Committee. Her plays have been produced all across Canada.  Her latest play  Funeral Fore! completes her trilogy of one act plays.  The first was Mr. Fix It, which was nominated for a Betty Mitchel Theatre award and Second Chance, First Love which was nominated for a Calgary Theatre Critics award. Written as an homage to Neil Simon this trilogy was published as Pallier Suite, by Frontenac House Press.  She currently teaches playwriting at the Calgary Public Library and Alexandra Writers Centre.
