SHOW SUMMARY

They’ve got a plan. Leo and Lizzy Martinez want to be the smartest kids in the world! The children of hardworking immigrants, big brother Leo has convinced his little sis that being smart is the key to helping their family escape a tough, uncertain reality. The first step in the plan—Leo will win the local TV kids’ quiz show. But when their parents refuse to let him join the quiz team, Lizzy learns there’s something deeper driving Leo—something that makes life that much more challenging and unpredictable for her brother and her family. Seeing her brother’s spirit broken, Lizzy is determined to grow up, give up her dreams and rescue the plan to see it through. Along the way, she and Leo discover that it takes more than being serious and “smart” to save a family and one another. The Smartest Girl in the World takes a look at the bonds of family and the key to facing life’s challenges together.

FROM THE DIRECTOR JAVIER VILALTA

Like many of those who immigrate every day in search of new opportunities, I left my home in Mexico years ago to begin a new life in Canada. Taking this big step all by myself meant I would be able to finally prove I was strong and smart enough to face any obstacle without having to depend on anyone else. It wasn’t long until life taught me a very valuable lesson: the love and support of those who most believe in you will always be fundamental to grow and thrive.

In Miriam Gonzales’ play The Smartest Girl in the World, we are presented with the imaginative world of two first-generation Latinx children: Lizzy and Leo Martínez. Through a journey that takes us through colorful fantasies and sensitive realities, we are introduced to one of the strongest attributes associated with the Latinx culture: the importance of relying on one's familia. In this special story, it is the youngest member of the family who fearlessly embarks on a mission to help her brother accomplish their mutual dreams.

Combining lighthearted situations with moments of sincerity and truth, Lizzy’s quest reminds us that the smartest people are not necessarily those with the highest academic degrees. Being the smartest in the world also means dealing with challenges and uncertainty with care, determination, and courage. All of which can be achieved through the unbreakable bonds found in family.

With this production, StoryBook Theatre has assembled a group of Latinx artists that proudly represents the rich diversity found in our communities: from first-time thespians to newcomers and immigrant artists who are given the rare opportunity to perform in the English for the first time.

Just like the Martínez siblings, I hope this presentation reminds you of the affection and encouragement we constantly receive from those we consider our family, all while immersing ourselves in a heartwarming exploration of Latinx dreams come true.
