In a season defined by courage, resilience, and artistic boldness, One Christmas Carol is a shining example of all three. As part of our 49th Season to be Brave, this production strips down a beloved holiday classic to its raw emotional core—presenting over 30 characters and an entire Dickensian world through the singular brilliance of one performer.
That performer is the incomparable Natascha Girgis.
Taking on One Christmas Carol is no ordinary acting challenge. It requires not just exceptional range and technical skill, but profound emotional bravery. To command the stage alone, weaving seamlessly between characters and carrying an audience through such a rich and layered tale—it’s nothing short of extraordinary. And Natascha delivers it all with grace, precision, and breathtaking artistry.
Her performance reminds us that sometimes the bravest thing an artist can do is stand alone, vulnerable and open, and invite us to see the world through their eyes. With each transformation, each shift in voice and energy, she reignites the heart of a story we all think we know—and makes it feel brand new.
This production is a celebration of storytelling in its purest form. No spectacle. No distractions. Just one actor, a timeless tale, and a deep belief in the power of theatre to move and transform us.
We are so proud to present One Christmas Carol this season, and even more proud to have a talent like Natascha Girgis bringing it to life on our stage. Her work embodies everything this season stands for.
Thank you for supporting brave art, bold choices, and the incredible people who make it possible.
With admiration and gratitude,
JP Thibodeau
Artistic Director, StoryBook TheatreEach holiday season, One Christmas Carol returns to our stage like an old friend—familiar, comforting, and deeply meaningful. And each year, I am profoundly honoured to reunite with the incredible team that brings this singular story to life with such heart and artistry.
At the center of it all is the incomparable Natascha Girgis, whose solo performance continues to leave me in awe. Her transformation into over 30 characters—seamlessly, powerfully, and with such emotional precision—is a theatrical feat that must be seen to be believed. Every year, she reminds us of the power of storytelling, of the strength in simplicity, and of the bravery it takes to stand alone on stage and carry a world on your shoulders.
But this year’s production holds an even deeper meaning for all of us.
We are overjoyed to welcome back our beloved Assistant Director, Roberta Mauer Phillips. Last holiday season, Roberta was in the midst of a courageous battle with cancer, and at the time, we did not know if she would be with us for another season of this magical show. Her return to the creative team this year is nothing short of a miracle—one that fills all of us with gratitude, joy, and renewed appreciation for the moments we get to share.
Roberta’s insight, passion, and presence have shaped this production in countless ways, and having her back with us this season is one of the greatest gifts we could receive.
One Christmas Carol has always been a story of redemption, resilience, and hope—and this year, it resonates more deeply than ever. I am so proud of the team that continues to pour their hearts into it, and so thankful for the audiences who return year after year to share in this tradition.
To Roberta, Natascha, and the entire team—thank you for your courage and your brilliance.
To our audience—thank you for believing in the power of one voice to tell a timeless tale.
With heartfelt gratitude,
JP Thibodeau

One Christmas Carol by Douglas H. Baker is a masterful one-man adaptation of Charles Dickens’ timeless holiday story, A Christmas Carol. In this inventive retelling, a single actor brings to life over two dozen characters—from the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge to the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come—using only the power of voice, movement, and imagination. The result is an intimate and electrifying performance that captures both the simplicity and grandeur of Dickens’ message.
The story follows Scrooge on his haunting journey through one fateful Christmas Eve, as he is visited by three spirits who reveal to him the consequences of his greed and indifference. Through these encounters, Scrooge confronts his past mistakes, witnesses the joys and sorrows of the present, and faces the bleak future that awaits if he fails to change his ways. Each ghostly visitation pushes him closer to redemption and a renewed sense of compassion for others.
With its stripped-down staging and emotional depth, One Christmas Carol focuses on the essence of Dickens’ tale—human transformation, generosity, and the enduring spirit of Christmas. It’s a celebration of storytelling itself, reminding audiences that no matter how many times we hear the tale, its message of hope and humanity never grows old.
