  • Few characters in literature embody courage quite like Anne Shirley. That is why Anne of Green Gables: The Musical is a perfect fit for our 49th Season to be Brave—a season that celebrates bold choices, resilient spirits, and the beauty of becoming.

Anne’s journey from orphan to beloved daughter, from outsider to cherished friend, is a timeless story of transformation. But what makes her journey truly powerful is the way she faces adversity—not with bitterness, but with imagination, hope, and unwavering determination to be unapologetically herself. That is bravery at its finest.

This musical captures the heart and humour of L.M. Montgomery’s beloved tale with sweeping music and unforgettable characters. It reminds us that bravery doesn’t always wear armor—it sometimes wears braids and carries a notebook full of dreams. It lives in moments of vulnerability, of kindness, of choosing love even after great loss.

Anne of Green Gables also speaks deeply to our Canadian identity—rooted in storytelling, community, and the quiet strength of those who dare to hope. In sharing this story, we honour our history while inspiring a new generation to lead with heart.

We are thrilled to bring this classic to the StoryBook stage once again, reimagined through the lens of bravery and belonging. Thank you for joining us on this journey and for believing in the power of theatre to uplift, inspire, and unite.

    With gratitude,

    JP Thibodeau
    Artistic Director, StoryBook Theatre

  • Anne of Green Gables: The Musical is a beloved stage adaptation of L.M. Montgomery’s classic novel, featuring music by Norman Campbell and book and lyrics by Donald Harron, with additional lyrics by Elaine Campbell and Mavor Moore. Set in the small rural community of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island at the turn of the century, the story follows Anne Shirley, an imaginative and fiery red-haired orphan who is mistakenly sent to live with aging siblings Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert—who had intended to adopt a boy to help on their farm.

Despite her rocky start and tendency to get into trouble, Anne’s boundless spirit, vivid imagination, and determination gradually win over the hearts of the Cuthberts and the entire town. Through schoolyard rivalries, deep friendships, and lessons in humility and forgiveness, Anne grows from a mischievous girl into a bright young woman who brings joy and transformation to those around her. Her journey is one of finding belonging, love, and a true sense of home.

Filled with uplifting music, heartfelt humor, and a celebration of resilience and individuality, Anne of Green Gables: The Musical captures the charm and warmth of Montgomery’s world. It’s a timeless story about the power of imagination, the beauty of growing up, and the enduring belief that family is not only found—it’s made through love and acceptance.
