Valerie Ann Pearson has been a professional actor since 1979. Music has been a driving factor in her life. She started piano lessons at the age of five, and competed in musical festivals as both a singer and a piano player and even a beginner violinist. She played in a symphony for three years and a teenage rock band as lead vocalist. But her summer at the Banff School of Fine Arts in the Drama department at the age of sixteen changed her focus to theatre. She graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Education with a major in Drama and a minor in music. Over the years Val has played and sung in a folk group, big band and had her own trio which toured the Calgary/Banff circuit. Her first musical was “Wild Rose” by W.O. Mitchell and Morris Surdin which toured across Canada to Expo ’67. In the 80’s and onward Val performed in musicals such as Hoarse Muse, Eighteen Wheels (three times); Oliver and The Music Man at The Citadel with Robin Phillips; The Full Monty; Godspell and The Beggars Opry for ATP; Cowgirls (twice); and Country Hearts at Theatre Calgary. As a musical director and/or director, Val has worked on Buddy Holly, The Ring of Fire, Anne of Green Gables, The Paper Bag Princess, Jeremy de Bergerac, and most recently Crossing Swords with Forte and StoryBook.

MUSICAL DIRECTOR/WRITER - Joe Slabe

Joe Slabe is well known to StoryBook audiences as the writer and composer of The Paper Bag Princess, The Urban Jungle Book, ’Twas the Night Before Christmas and Crossing Swords. He was the musical director for Mary Poppins and Matilda, and he also develops new musicals for adults along with StoryBook’s artistic director, JP Thibodeau. He lived in London while getting his master’s degree in musical theatre from Goldsmiths College and returned home to found Forte Musical Theatre Guild. Joe’s shows have been performed in Calgary, London, New York and in cities across Canada and the United States. He’s won a few awards and been nominated for a bunch more. His last name rhymes with “The Bay”.

Choreographer); Elsewhere: Select choreography credits include Naughty But Nice! (Forte), Touch Me (Theatre Calgary/Forte), Lest We Forget, Newfoundland Mary (Lunchbox Theatre); Of interest: Lauren has performed & choreographed with the Youth Singers of Calgary for over 20 years! She’s performed locally with the SHINE ensemble, Storybook Theatre, Calaway Live, and illFX Entertainment. In her “spare time” she works her full-time job at Lunchbox Theatre as the Director of Marketing & Communications.

Congratulations! You are invited to join us this coming Sunday for a callback for our upcoming production of The Paperbag Princess a musical.

Everyone invited is requested to join us for a ONE HOUR callback with the option to have you return for a second callback later in the day.

Each artist is asked to PREPARE THE APPROPRIATE SIDES for the character(s) assigned to them as well as submit a SELF-TAPED CHOREOGRAPHY VIDEO. ONLY those being seen for DRAGON are required to submit a new audition song, even if already submitted.

Please find your assigned group, callback time and character assignment on this page. Everyone should be familiar with all characters within scenes as you may be asked to read for additional roles.

COMMITMENT SCHEDULE

Please review the Rehearsal and Filming Schedule prior to making this commitment. Conflicts may be accommodated and considered during the rehearsal process. YOU MUST be available for all filming dates and at least 90% of scheduled rehearsals in order to be considered for a production.
