To our valued StoryBook community...

Updates on Coronavirus (COVID-19) StoryBook Theatre

May 16, 2020

To our valued StoryBook community,

We want to thank you all for your patience, understanding, and support in these unprecedented times.  These last two months have been a measure of the human spirit and a testament to the value of community and the work we do.  In an irony not lost on us, the pandemic has brought to light the incredible “everyday heroes” that make StoryBook what it is and the value in being pushed to our “growing edge”, which are the themes for our current and next season.

Over the last month, we have been rediscovering what it means to create theatre and its impact on our community of artists and the 50,000+ Calgarians that choose to share StoryBook with their family and friends.  It is because of this, we are announcing that the StoryBook Board of Directors and I have decided to stand tall and continue to create opportunities for our community to connect.

This Monday, May 18th at 1 pm, StoryBook will unveil plans to move forward with our 2020/21 Season and revised Theatre School programming live on Facebook following our daily talk show, Everyday HEROES @ Home.

One of the most important things we can offer at this time is an enriched sense of community.  While we know moving forward will not be in the traditional format, we do know it is the best decision for our organization and community as a whole.

We have thought long and hard about what this means and we want to assure everyone that the safety of our casts, crew, staff, and patrons is paramount and will always take priority as we look forward throughout our planning.

Over the next few days, we will be reaching out to all our patrons affected by the postponement and cancellations of our programming due to COVID-19 and let them know what they can expect as we move forward.

Season 44 is appropriately themed “On the Growing Edge”, and 2020/21 will challenge us in ways have we never dreamed of before.  We are excited by the possibility of what could and will be, including how we get to connect with you; whether that be in person, online, or something in between.

Finally, as a non-profit organization, we are grateful for your understanding in this difficult and unprecedented time. No one could plan for the situation we find ourselves in, but we will continue to adapt and are hopeful that you will be excited to support this new chapter of StoryBook programming.

Thank you again for your continued patronage and we look forward to sharing the magic of theatre with you.

Please join us on Monday for our Season update.

Sincerely,

JP Thibodeau

May 18, 2020

It's time to push our growing edge.

StoryBook is thrilled to announce our plans to keep moving toward our growing edge!

For the last 43 years, we have had the honour to entertain over one million Calgarians.  We have been an integral part of generations of families who have chosen to share the art of theatre with their children and loved ones.  This is a bond we take very seriously and one we knew we had to uphold.

When presented with the challenges of COVID-19, StoryBook was faced with a harsh reality. This could very well be the end of an incredible legacy.  Without our theatre productions and theatre school, the well would run dry after just a few months and StoryBook would sadly cease to exist.

Instead of allowing that to be the case, our Artistic Producer, JP Thibodeau, has dug deep and worked tirelessly to navigate the ins and outs from what would have been, to what could and will be. We can’t imagine Calgary without StoryBook, and we hope you feel the same.

StoryBook is pleased to announce that we will bring Season 44 to life and truly be “on our growing edge”.

Let us start by saying that the safety of our cast, crew, volunteers, patrons and community is paramount and we will always adhere to the regulations set forth by the federal, provincial and municipal governments.

Our season is divided into two areas: THEATRE PRODUCTION & THEATRE SCHOOL.

We have redeveloped all our THEATRE SCHOOL programming to be online and feature a new subscription program. We have no doubt that this new programming will excite kids at every age, maybe mom and dad too!

Each week, students will get to choose from over 25 different online classes that are one-hour long and age-divided. And even better, your kids won’t need to wait until the summer. This program will start in the first week of June! More information about this exciting new theatre school program can be found online later this week.

As for our THEATRE PRODUCTIONS, we have made the bold decision to move forward as if our programming were to happen under the current social distancing measures. The safety of our community as a whole is important and we plan to embrace the current regulations rather than hide from them

We may not be able to present our shows to a live theatre audience (yet), but we are excited by the potential this challenge presents. Should we not be able to present the show in-person, we plan to stream all shows online exclusively to our ticket holders.  No matter what, every ticket holder will still receive a wonderful production by an incredible community of artists.

It is our hope that, in the coming months, we will once again welcome a LIVE audience of some shape and size to our productions. As the provincial and municipal guidelines for public gatherings and socialization shift, we will also adapt and look forward to bringing our community together again to do what we do best.

Finally, we are excited to announce subscription renewals for our 44th Season will open on Monday, June 15th, 2020. New subscriptions will open on July 13th and all single tickets will open August 17th.

All audition and production-related information will be announced in the coming days through our website and social media platforms.

We have faith and trust that you will be there to cheer us on, no matter what the future of this pandemic has in store. As patrons of our programming, we look for your flexibility and understanding in our effort to provide quality family programming.  We know that this change is not without its challenges, but we are ready to stand tall and push ourselves to our growing edge, we hope you are too!

Sincerely,
StoryBook Theatre Board of Directors &

May 15, 2020 - Big Fish & Frog and Toad Ticket Info

To our valued Ticket Holders & Theatre School patrons.

Tonight would have been the opening of our final production of StoryBook’s 43rd Season, Big Fish the musical.  These have not been an easy eight weeks. We have watched days slip by knowing that our theatre could have been filled with incredible audiences like you and all those patrons who support the work we do.

Earlier today we announced plans to move forward with our 2020/21 Season and we have sadly made the decision to not include our productions of Big Fish or A Year with Frog & Toad.  We hold a special place in our hearts for both of these productions and know that one day they will find themselves on the StoryBook stage.  For now, we say goodbye to what could have been and look toward the future of what will be.

In light of this decision, we have moved forward with crediting your account for the full value of your ticket purchase.  This credit can be applied toward any future StoryBook offering, including theatre subscriptions, tickets and theatre school programming and will have no expiry.

Alternatively, we would also like to invite you to convert your credit into a tax-deductible donation to StoryBook Theatre.

As you know, we are a non-profit that relies on the sales of our programming to support the work that we do.  The forced closure has had a devastating impact on our organization and we are working very hard to make sure StoryBook will see the light of Season 44.

What may surprise many of you is that we operate with absolutely no corporate support.  We also receive less than 6% through government subsidy annually. The casino funding we rely on has been lost as the Casino’s are also closed and there is no indication of when or if that loss will be recovered.

The fact is, the impact this pandemic will have on the work StoryBook does will last for years to come.

While we are happy to credit your file for future use, we humbly ask those of you that can, to please consider converting your credit into a donation towards our ongoing efforts in sustainability. Anyone wishing to make a donation will be entered into a draw to win one of ten Family Subscriptions for 4 for the upcoming 44th Season.

If you wish to keep your CREDIT ON FILE for future use, we are happy to do so and no further action is required.

If you wish to turn your credit into a donation, please reply to this email by simply typing DONATE and we will gladly make that happen and forward your tax-deductible receipt to you immediately.

Please note, our offices remain closed at this time.

As a non-profit organization, we thank you for your support in this difficult and unprecedented time. We look to you for your compassion and understanding in knowing that no one could plan for the situation we find ourselves in, but we look forward to your support as we unveil the next chapter in StoryBook programming.

We thank you for your patronage and understanding and look forward to sharing the magic of theatre with you when we announce all we have planned this Monday, May 18th at 1 pm on our Facebook Page immediately following our daily talk show Everyday HEROES @ Home.

Sincerely,

To our valued StoryBook community,

We have been watching the COVID-19 situation closely as the health and safety of our employees and patrons are our number one priorities. During these uncertain times, StoryBook has been working incredibly hard to make the best decisions for all who participate and attend our programming.

As a non-profit organization we are asking for your support in this difficult and unprecedented time. We look to you for your compassion and understanding that no one could plan for the events put before us all.

StoryBook Theatre takes concerns surrounding coronavirus (COVID-19) seriously. We are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to check and follow the most up-to-date Alberta Health Services, World Health Organisation (WHO) and Government guidance on the virus. At this time, the risk to Alberta is still assessed as low. You can monitor this status by visiting albertahealthservices.ca. At this time, there have been no changes to our upcoming production schedule for the 2019/2020 season.

In addition, we have increased our cleaning regime, with special attention on our door handles, seating in the theatre space and high-volume areas.   We have also made some modifications to our programming to promote safe practices, one such change is the removal of autograph lines post-show.  Instead, we will offer a 10-minute talkback where patrons will be invited to ask questions of the actors.

Please be assured that the safety and health of our staff and visitors is StoryBook's top priority. We will be continuing to monitor the status of the situation and implementing any new recommendations set by the aforementioned governing bodies. Be sure to check this page for updates surrounding our coronavirus (COVID-19) measures as they become available, and follow us on all of our social media platforms for the latest.
