Here are some helpful videos on how best to make your self-tape.
Tips from the StoryBook Theatre team:
-
Take the time to set up your space! Make sure your video is well lit, and that you are auditioning against a simple, non-distracting background. When framing your video, face the camera and allow yourself enough room to move and perform.
-
Optimize your audio. Ensure that we can hear your voice clearly and without distraction. Avoid performing in an echoey space. Please have accompanying music play from a separate device, ideally from somewhere behind you so that your voice can stand out.
-
Check your audition video before submitting. Do a final review to ensure that the video and audio in your submission has captured your audition successfully.
WHY NOT PAY THE ACTORS?
We are deeply committed to fostering the growth and development of emerging artists by providing them with a platform to hone their craft. As with many other esteemed community theatres like Front Row Centre Players, Morpheus Theatre, and Workshop Theatre, our funding model aligns with the ethos of community theatre.
At StoryBook, we do not offer paid contracts to our performers. Instead, we encourage our talented artists to pursue paid opportunities with professional theatres in Alberta and beyond. We wholeheartedly support their aspirations and wish them every success in their journey.
Our focus is on providing a comprehensive learning experience for our actors, bridging the gap between emerging and professional communities. Through on-the-job training facilitated by working theatre professionals offstage, we aim to elevate our artists' skills and prepare them for the next stage of their careers.
StoryBook Theatre serves as a valuable platform for artists to network, learn, and grow. To further enhance their experience, we offer a range of opportunities, including free professional workshops covering various aspects of theatre production. Additionally, our matinee bursaries provide financial support for those who may need to take time off from their regular jobs to participate in our productions.
We want every artist who joins us to view StoryBook as a stepping stone in their theatrical journey, not just a destination. While compensation beyond personal growth may not be part of our model, we are dedicated to equipping our artists with the skills and experiences needed to succeed, whether they pursue theatre as a recreational passion or a professional career.
Ultimately, if your auditioning expectations include monetary compensation, StoryBook may not align with your goals. However, if you're seeking a nurturing learning environment where you can thrive and prepare for future opportunities, we warmly welcome you to join us on this enriching journey.
