Commitment & Information

May 1 to June 4

The first step is the easiest: take the leap and audition for our season either in person or through self-tape by the audition deadline.

June 10 by 9pm

Invites, along with specific materials to be prepared will then be sent to those folx whom each team would like to see more from at the audition callback.
Each show has its own callback; see the commitment info below for specific dates.

see show info

Each show will then see a group of people who have been asked to prepare materials for the callback date.  You may be asked to be seen for several shows and therefore have multiple shows to prepare for.  Please plan to stay for the full duration of each callback you are invited to.

by June 28 at 9pm

After callbacks are complete each team will them decide which artist best suits each role.  All those cast in the show will be contacted first.  Everyone will hear regardless of the outcome.  Everything is done via email.

What do I need to prepare for the audition?

We'll keep this simple.

1 monologue from a play/musical
1 song from a musical (musicals only)

1 hello video (video submission only)

1 headshot/photo of you

1 resume/list of performing experience

1 digital track to sing along with

Each show has its own commitment and show schedule.  Review these below to understand the commitment you are making.

No. Returning StoryBook alumni have the luxury to simply submit interest in being seen for the different shows.  They simply must complete the online form in order to be considered for callbacks.  No initial audition is required.

Yes. We offer artists the chance to elevate their craft and contribute to our vibrant community, fostering personal growth and artistic development. So yes, at its heart, StoryBook is powered by volunteers who shape our productions into cherished experiences for audiences of all ages.

Yes. With six captivating productions featuring over 100 roles spanning ages from 10 to 110 years old, we break the mould by welcoming actors of all ages to audition. This reflects our deep commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

There is no such thing as good enough.  There's only one of you. We're eager to meet you, uncover your unique talents, and envision the wonderful collaboration we could create together.

Can anyone audition and be part of StoryBook?

YES! We firmly believe that the richness of our stories lies in the diversity and inclusivity of our community. Our stage is a reflection of the world around us, and we're committed to creating an environment where every individual, regardless of age, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, physical or mental ability, or ethnicity, feels empowered to unleash their creativity. We welcome and encourage all voices to join us in crafting unforgettable narratives both on and off the stage.

What if I cannot do all of the scheduled shows?

That is ok! Should scheduling conflicts arise due to prior employment commitments, we encourage you to still audition. While we cannot guarantee accommodations for all performance dates, alternative arrangements may be possible to ensure your participation. Don't let this deter you from engaging in the audition process; your talent and dedication are valued, and we're committed to exploring solutions to support your inclusion.

Here are some helpful videos on how best to make your self-tape.

Tips from the StoryBook Theatre team:

  • Take the time to set up your space! Make sure your video is well lit, and that you are auditioning against a simple, non-distracting background. When framing your video, face the camera and allow yourself enough room to move and perform.

  • Optimize your audio. Ensure that we can hear your voice clearly and without distraction. Avoid performing in an echoey space. Please have accompanying music play from a separate device, ideally from somewhere behind you so that your voice can stand out.

  • Check your audition video before submitting. Do a final review to ensure that the video and audio in your submission has captured your audition successfully.

We are deeply committed to fostering the growth and development of emerging artists by providing them with a platform to hone their craft. As with many other esteemed community theatres like Front Row Centre Players, Morpheus Theatre, and Workshop Theatre, our funding model aligns with the ethos of community theatre.

At StoryBook, we do not offer paid contracts to our performers. Instead, we encourage our talented artists to pursue paid opportunities with professional theatres in Alberta and beyond. We wholeheartedly support their aspirations and wish them every success in their journey.

Our focus is on providing a comprehensive learning experience for our actors, bridging the gap between emerging and professional communities. Through on-the-job training facilitated by working theatre professionals offstage, we aim to elevate our artists' skills and prepare them for the next stage of their careers.

StoryBook Theatre serves as a valuable platform for artists to network, learn, and grow. To further enhance their experience, we offer a range of opportunities, including free professional workshops covering various aspects of theatre production. Additionally, our matinee bursaries provide financial support for those who may need to take time off from their regular jobs to participate in our productions.

We want every artist who joins us to view StoryBook as a stepping stone in their theatrical journey, not just a destination. While compensation beyond personal growth may not be part of our model, we are dedicated to equipping our artists with the skills and experiences needed to succeed, whether they pursue theatre as a recreational passion or a professional career.

Ultimately, if your auditioning expectations include monetary compensation, StoryBook may not align with your goals. However, if you're seeking a nurturing learning environment where you can thrive and prepare for future opportunities, we warmly welcome you to join us on this enriching journey.
