JP Thibodeau joined StoryBook Theatre as the Interim Artistic Director in January 2013. After completing a successful season in the new Beddingtown Heights Community Arts Centre the board announced his appointment in the summer of 2013 as the Managing Artistic Director.
In 2014 StoryBook Theatre took steps towards a new rebranding and focus as part of the Calgary Theatre Community. A stronger mandate was made towards quality family entertainment and the inclusion of Calgary's professional theatre community in all of their shows. Under his guidance and leadership, StoryBook has achieved great success and strong revitalization recognized by the theatre community both in Calgary and nationally with StoryBook becoming Canada's Largest volunteer driven Theatre for Young Audiences company in Canada.
An award winning actor, designer and director JP has been both on and off the stage all over the world. He is the Artistic Director for Canada’s largest semi professional theatre for young audiences, StoryBook Theatre. Over the past 3 years he has worked with playwright and composer Joe Slabe to create world premiere musicals, including Lest We Forget, Naughty But Nice and the multi-award winning Touch Me: songs for a disconnected age, present by Theatre Calgary. Over his career JP has directed more than 55 musicals of all sizes and has worked hard to foster and develop the growth of young musical theatre artists across the country. He has a degree in Theatre Arts and Drama in Education, was a nominee for the 2017 Rosza Award and at the 2016 Betty Mitchell Awards he was the recipient of the Greg Bond Memorial Award for his outstanding contribution to musical theatre in Calgary. Recent credits (on and off stage) include: Richard III, Romeo & Juliet (The Shakespeare Co.); The Money Shot (Ground Zero); Annie Davidson, (Cowtown Opera); Rock of Ages, The 39 Steps, (Stage West); Lest We Forget, Dads In Bondage, (Lunchbox Theatre); A New Brain, The Last 5 Years, Avenue Q (StoryBook Theatre); Sweeney Todd (Calgary Opera). JP always makes time for his understanding and supportive wife Tara and sons, Evan Xander and Isaac Tanner, who make the endless hours and demands of theatre worthwhile.
