ACTOR POST-SECONDARY PREP:

THE ART OF AUDITIONING

Auditioning for post-secondary institutions can be a daunting process. We have designed this course to demystify the post-secondary audition process, help students prepare useable audition materials, and give students the skills they need to set themselves up for success when auditioning for post-secondary programs in Theatre, Music, or Musical Theatre!

COURSE OUTLINE*


Class 1 - September 27

Course introduction. Overview of university auditions and requirements, and choosing appropriate repertoire. Students will receive guidance to choose one song and one monologue to work on. 

Class 2 - October 4

Individual song and monologue coaching, and skill building. 

Class 3 - October 11

Song and monologue coaching continued. A guest instructor will join for one hour of class to work with students on Group Dance Calls. 

Class 4 - October 18

Song and monologue coaching continued. A guest instructor will join for one hour of class to work with students on Group Dance Calls. 

Class 5 - October 25

Mock-Auditions and session debrief. 

Class 6 - Date TBD

Students will record their song and monologue with guidance from instructors for use for pre-screen submissions or audition recordings. This final class will be scheduled at a later date based on student and instructor availability.

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

JOEL SCHAEFER

Joel Schaefer is a Betty Mitchell Award nominated performer, music director, and educator. See him later this year in Lunchbox Theatre's production of With Bells On! He has been a theatre educator for over a decade, and is currently the Associate Artistic Director of Innovative Arts, Inc. in Oakville, Ontario. He has taught with Randolph College for the Performing Arts, St. Francis High School, Storybook Theatre, Annex Children's Theatre, and CATS. Performing Credits include: The Louder We Get, Escape to Margaritaville, Billy Elliot (Theatre Calgary), Tick, Tick… Boom!, Naughty… But Nice: Vaccin8! (Forte), Morricone + Bernstein, Ragtime (Calgary Philharmonic), The Ding Dong Girls (Factory Theatre), Beauty and the Beast (Young People’s Theatre), Slipper (ATP). Joel also runs a private studio where he teaches voice. Select Music Direction credits include: TC Sings For Pride (Theatre Calgary); Legally Blonde [Music Director and Co-Director]; Pippin, Elf, The Sound of Music, Annie (SBT); Dex Delaney: A Stranger in Balzac (St. Francis); A Glass Hive [Music Director and Assistant Director] (Randolph College). CRISTINA LANZ

Cristina Lanz is a Calgarian singer, actor, educator, and arts administrator. You may recognize her as the Theatre School Program Coordinator here at StoryBook Theatre! Cristina is passionate about creating opportunities for accessible arts education for students of all backgrounds. She has over a decade of teaching experience in music and drama and she has taught students ages 3 to adult in private voice and piano, theatre camps, and drama classes with companies in Calgary and Okotoks, and with Little Opera in San Francisco

As a performer, Cristina has performed in opera, theatre, and musical theatre productions across a variety of musical genres including Baroque, operetta, and contemporary music. Some of her favourite roles include: Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Estelle (Later the Same Evening), Baker's Wife (Into the Woods), and Mrs. Gibbs (Our Town). ​

Cristina holds a Bachelor of Music from the University of Toronto and a Master of Music from the San Francisco Conservatory in addition to a Diploma in Theatre Performance from Mount Royal University. Currently, she is based in Calgary, AB where she regularly performs as a member of the Calgary Opera Chorus as well as with other local companies such as the Firebird Symphony & Chorus and Calgary Concert Opera.
