President's Report

Dear esteemed members of the Board of Directors,
I write to you today on behalf of the Board of Directors to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the incredible 48th Season to Belong at StoryBook Theatre. This season was a true testament to the power of storytelling, the passion of our artists, and the unwavering commitment of our leadership, volunteers, and patrons.
StoryBook Theatre continues to be a beacon of excellence in the arts, and this year was no exception. The energy that radiated from our stages was undeniable, with countless artists bringing their talent, creativity, and dedication to every production. Each performance was a testament to the power of live theatre, reminding us all of its ability to inspire, educate, and connect. Our actors, designers, directors, technicians, and production teams poured their hearts into their work, creating experiences that will be remembered for years to come.
At the heart of it all is the visionary leadership of JP Thibodeau. His unwavering passion, innovation, and dedication to this organization are the driving forces behind StoryBook Theatre’s continued success. Under his guidance, StoryBook has not only thrived but has grown into a theatre company that embraces inclusivity, mentorship, and artistic excellence. His ability to lead with both heart and determination ensures that our theatre remains a place where artists and audiences alike feel they truly belong.
We must also recognize the incredible efforts of our volunteers—the lifeblood of this organization. From the front-of-house teams welcoming audiences to the set painters, costumers, and stage crew who bring productions to life behind the scenes, each and every volunteer has played a vital role in making this season a success. Their dedication to our mission is unparalleled, and we are forever grateful.
And, of course, to our patrons—thank you. Your unwavering support, your belief in our work, and your commitment to live theatre allow us to continue sharing these meaningful experiences with the community. Your return to our theatre, your applause, and your engagement fuel our passion and make everything we do worthwhile.
The past year has been filled with triumphs, challenges, and unforgettable moments, but through it all, our community has remained strong and dedicated. Because of you, StoryBook Theatre continues to be a home for artists, audiences, and dreamers alike.

Artistic Producer's Report

As I reflect on the incredible 48th Season to Belong at StoryBook Theatre, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. This season has been a testament to the passion, resilience, and boundless creativity of our artists, volunteers, and patrons who continue to breathe life into our productions. More than ever, this season embodied what it means to belong—to be part of something greater, to share in the magic of theatre, and to build a community that uplifts and inspires.
One of the biggest artistic triumphs of the season was Something Rotten! Despite the financial challenges it faced, the production was a resounding creative success. It marked a historic moment for StoryBook Theatre as we received multiple Betty Mitchell Award nominations, our first-ever inclusion in Calgary’s professional theatre awards. We were especially thrilled to see Melissa Mitchell take home the award for Best Costumes of the 2023/24 Theatre Season—a well-earned recognition of her talent and dedication. It was a moment of belonging, where we saw our artists recognized among the best in the city.
While we remain committed to responding to our community’s programming requests, not every production finds its audience. HONK!, a show designed for ages 3+, was one of our most requested titles, yet it became the least attended production in the last 10 years. Still, it was a story about embracing differences and finding one’s place—an important message in a season dedicated to belonging.
On the other hand, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soared to success, captivating audiences with its magical flying car—a monumental feat of technical and creative design. This production reminded us that the impossible is possible when we come together to dream big and make magic happen.
Our Top Secret Musical presentation of Sweeney Todd was met with critical acclaim and has now cemented itself as the must-see event of the season. The excitement and anticipation surrounding this annual production continue to grow, proving that belonging is also about shared experiences and traditions that bring our community together.
Another remarkable milestone was the first iteration of One Christmas Carol, starring Natascha Girgis, whose performance wowed both audiences and critics alike. This one-person show highlighted the power of storytelling and the intimacy of theatre, reinforcing that we all have a place in the narratives we share.
A Wrinkle in Time was a beautiful and thoughtful production, one that we are incredibly proud to have shared with our audiences. And as we closed the season with The Music Man, we could not have asked for a more joyous and fitting conclusion to a year centered around the theme of belonging. This production brought people together in song, spirit, and celebration—proving that no matter where we come from, we all have a place in the world of theatre.
Through all these productions, the unwavering support of our volunteers, artists, and patrons has been invaluable. StoryBook Theatre thrives because of the passionate individuals who dedicate their time and energy to making each performance special. Each person who contributed—whether on stage, behind the scenes, or in the audience—helped build a season that truly defined what it means to belong.
At the heart of it all is the belief that theatre has the power to inspire, to bring people together, and to create a sense of belonging for all who step through our doors. As we look ahead to the next season, we do so with excitement, knowing that the best is yet to come.
