WHO ARE WE?
StoryBook Theatre is Canada's largest volunteer-driven Theatres for Young Audiences and families. In our almost 48 years of serving Calgary, we have fostered the love and passion for theatre arts in over one million people. Each season we bring together some of the industry's brightest emerging talents both on and off the stage to create some incredibly accessible theatre for the whole family.
We bring stories to life in a way that encourages children and their families to dream about who they are and may become, to explore the story from different perspectives, to think using inductive reasoning, and to connect to other people and ideas.
MISSION STATEMENT
StoryBook celebrates the power of theatre to inspire children and their families to dream, explore, think, and connect through high-caliber accessible theatre school programming and productions.
VISION STATEMENT
StoryBook Theatre seeks to provide a vital performing arts organization known for its commitment to accessible and diverse family theatre programming.

Our Commitment to our Community
Our actions & continued work toward equity, inclusivity, diversity and accessibility
As the world around us has risen up, it is important for StoryBook to take this time and look inward. We have been having difficult and inspiring conversations amongst ourselves, our artists, and the community we serve.

President's Report

Dear esteemed members of the Board of Directors,
I write to you today on behalf of the Board of Directors to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for the unwavering support, commitment, and dedication shown by our esteemed patrons, volunteers, and employees.
Our theatre group stands as a shining example of excellence, largely due to the exceptional efforts put forth by our remarkable team of devoted employees led by the exemplary JP Thibodeau. Time and time again, they have astounded our audiences, students, and volunteers with their boundless drive, unbridled creativity, and fearlessness in facing any challenge that StoryBook has encountered. Their tireless contributions continue to instill a belief in the enchantment of theatre within us all. Moreover, they have played an instrumental role in fostering a community of volunteers that is unparalleled in its passion and devotion.
From ushers to set painters to actors - every single volunteer at SBT has been an invaluable asset throughout our illustrious 47-year journey. Your selfless donation of time has been the lifeblood that has kept this theatre thriving through the years. To our cherished patrons: none of this would have been possible without your unwavering support. We extend heartfelt thanks for your active participation in all facets of the theatrical experiences we have offered over these past few years. Above all else, we are profoundly grateful for your triumphant return to live theatre when we once again opened our doors.
The past year presented challenges unlike any other; however, through it all, you believed in us wholeheartedly. For this steadfast belief in our mission and vision for Storybook Theater Group's future success, we extend our sincere thanks.
With utmost gratitude,
Jolene Anderson
Board President

Artistic Producer's Report

As I reflect on the past year of theatrical presentations and our theatre school, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude and admiration for the resilience and dedication that has been inspired by our team and community
'
The 2022/23 Season presented challenges that surpassed even my highest expectations.
Throughout this season, we continuously adapted all our programming to align with the needs and requirements outlined by Alberta Health Services, ensuring the safety of everyone involved.
We were able to leverage last round of subsidies and grants to navigate these unprecedented times. Regrettably, it became apparent that funding began to dwindle as politicians seemed to shift their focus away from pandemic concerns. This lack of support was disheartening considering more than 75% of our audience remained hesitant about returning.

Though we had hoped for numbers reaching closer to pre-pandemic levels, achieving even 20,000 live viewers proved challenging. It was far from the nearly 28,000 attendees we had anticipated.
Nevertheless, with each presentation, we saw the theatre fit and grow and the right show title Brough the audience back in.
We continue to prioritize diversity on our stage. Approximately 34.5% of our artists represented BIPOC communities while 42.4% came from marginalized backgrounds. We strived diligently this year to ensure strong representation both on stage and behind-the-scenes within the communities we serve through our work.
Despite sales struggling throughout this period, we managed to engage nearly 250 artists on paid contracts throughout the year - an unwavering commitment towards supporting artists in need.
Our Theatre School experienced a slow start in terms of in-person presentations; however, by summer's arrival, it regained momentum and emerged stronger than ever before - solidifying its presence once again within StoryBook Theater Group's repertoire.

The Season inspired our community to come back and making sure that we knew they were with us. Looming inflation would have a strong impact after this season so we are happy and anxious to see where next season takes us.
